Introduction of the project

This summer we, four students from Aalto University, are working amidst a challenging real life problem. We are aiming to solve water related problems of Sisters of the Annunciation of Bobo (SAB) in Burkina Faso.

Sister Marie Rose Koné is a sister of the Sisters of the Annunciation of Bobo (SAB), responsible for several congregations in Burkina Faso. Dedougou is a city of 38 000 people (2006) in the western Burkina Faso. Four kilometers from Dedougou, the sisters run a schooling center for around 140 students. However, there are several problems in the area. One of the biggest is the insufficiency of water.

At the moment, the drinking water comes from the 10 meters deep well dug by hand. Addition to the students and the sisters living in the school, also other people living in the area use the same well. The amount of the water in the well is unknown. There is also a little garden near the school. Until now the well has also provided the water for gardening. The amount of the water in the well has decreased and it is not sufficient anymore. Also the quality of the water is poor because it is surface water: the digging was finished before it had reached the ground water. Also because of the large diameter of the well, things fall down into it which worsens the water quality. In addition to the garden near the school, the schooling center owns a big 10ha plantation area 1km away from the school. However, there is not enough water for the plantations and therefore the area has not yet been cultivated. Also the climate is challenging. It seldom rains in the area but when it rains it rains a lot. There is no electricity, nearest power line runs in Dedougou city, 4km away.

The objective of this project is to give a sustainable solution for the water problem in Dedougou school area. This means both clean water for drinking but especially providing enough water for starting the cultivation in the bigger plantation area 1km away from the school center. The objective is to provide a possibility to increase the variety of crops, plants and vegetables grown in the area and to prepare the way for beginning livestock production in the future.
